There is a stretch of mixed woodland below my Italian studio that includes oak, beech, cherry and sweet chestnut. The leaves are full of tannins and so my earth colours for sketching them in autumn includes, yellow ochre, raw sienna and burnt umber among a few others but I use a restrained pallet. of only a few colours.
